Halloween: Scarier than you think

As ridiculous as it may sound, Louisiana law still prohibits adults from wearing masks and  disguises in public during Halloween. While other states have laws that prevent disguises when nefarious purposes are involved (California, Michigan, Florida), Louisiana Revised Statute §14:313 does not require specific criminal intent to make masking illegal. First enacted in 1924, it is possible the law was written as a broad anti-Ku Klux Klan measure. However, while we don’t expect anyone to be arrested for costuming with their friends this Halloween, this statute illustrates that even some common New Orleans activities may run afoul of the law. And unfortunately ignorance of the law is not a defense. So if your werewolf costume actually gets you shackled, call a good attorney. We know a couple…
