Autumn Town began her legal career as an associate at a local New Orleans defense firm, before opening her own law practice in December of 2007.
Autumn has experience defending misdemeanors and felonies in state court, as well as federal criminal prosecutions. She also has experience handling direct appeals in criminal convictions in both state and federal court. Autumn has prepared and presented briefs and oral arguments before the Louisiana Circuit Courts, and had the opportunity to orally argue before the Louisiana Supreme Court on Lea Filson v. Windsor Court, et al, 907 So.2d 723 (La. 2005).
She has worked on such federal cases as the Habeas Petition of convicted New Orleans police officer Len Davis, and in her first post-conviction matter where she served as first-chair, a second degree murder conviction was reversed based on Brady material being withheld from the defense at trial. She also is working on the case of John Kinsel, whose conviction and life sentence were reversed when the alleged victim recanted her trial testimony. See La. Judge Orders New Trial for Man Serving Life for Rape, The Advocate, October 12, 2006. Autumn argued before the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals concerning the issue of Mr. Kinsel's actual innocence, and took the case to the United States Supreme Court. She is continuing to fight for Mr. Kinsel's exoneration.
Autumn was accepted to the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Eastern District of Louisiana in 2007, which appoints counsel to indigent federal defendants. She previously served as a public defender for the Orleans Indigent Defender Program, representing those who could not afford private counsel in New Orleans Municipal Court, where she handled over 3,000 cases.
Autumn received her Juris Doctorate (Cum Laude) from Tulane Law School in 2002, as well as a Master's Degree in Political Science from Tulane University in 2003 through a joint program. While in law school, Autumn competed in and won the Intra-School Junior Trial Moot Court Competition, and served on the Moot Court Board. She competed in the Regionals of the ABA Representation in Mediation Competition, and served as Junior Editor on the American Review of Arbitration. Autumn received her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Psychology from Tulane University in 1998, graduating Cum Laude.
Autumn is admitted to practice in all Louisiana state and federal courts, as well as the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. She is a member of several professional associations, and is currently serving as the Second Congressional District Director for the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She also served as past Vice President and Programs Chair of the New Orleans Association of Women Attorneys. Most recently, Autumn was named to serve on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Appellate Project, which provides appellate counsel for indigent clients in all non-capital felony appeals.
